My son’s 03 M3 has had the SEL activated three times with resultant code P0012 (‘A’ Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)). Each time he gets the SEL the engine idles and runs rough. However, the first two times after the code was cleared, the engine ran normally.Then after a few days, weeks, no particular time frame, the SEL comes on and rough running conditions exist again. The rough conditions begin upon an engine start. I have an 04 M3 and have not experienced these symptoms. Before he has the Intake Camshaft Position Sensor replaced (which is pretty expensive on the S54 engine), we were wondering if there is some other problem since once the code is reset/cleared, the engine runs fine for awhile.The BMW mechanic and the indie shops just say to replace the camshaft sensor. The mileage is 50,000 and there have been no modifications other than an aftermarket cat-back exhaust system. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give us.

The code that you mentioned could potentially be due to a faulty sensor or perhaps a VANOS problem.  Of these, the sensor would be more likely.  Early failures of the camshaft sensors is not uncommon.  Also, we see that there has been a supersession on the sensor, in 2006.  This is likely due to a redesign.  Before just throwing a sensor at it, you could install the sensor, from your M3, onto your son’s car and see if the fault continues or stays cleared.  This will tell you if the sensor is indeed at fault.  If the fault continues, you may have a VANOS unit problem.

2012 Acura TL Concept

Making his debut at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show, the newly refined Acura TL delivers fresh look, updated technology and improved performance. The refined look of the new TL 2012 includes a redesigned front bumper, with improved aerodynamics, a revised grille, updated headlights and turn signals, a new fog lamp design and a lower front overhang. At the rear, a new rear bumper incorporates an aperture plate repositioned significantly lower license and rear reflectors, as updated taillights and a rear edge of trunk thin finish add a sophisticated new look.
To increase performance, a new sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission is applied in all models Acura TL with automatic transmission. In addition to incorporating engineering improvements aimed at improving efficiency, a characteristic spirit of the sport of double kick-down command allows the driver of a double downshift – such as from fifth to third gear. The Drive-by-Wire ™ throttle system also creates a “blip” the throttle to help it reach speeds of gear while downshifting.
In addition, teams with a new transmission torque converter clutch multi-which not only reduces heat buildup during operation, but also allows for blocking the activation of a much wider range of driving conditions – which helps to generate better fuel economy. As a result, city / highway fuel economy is 20/29 mpg now – an increase of 3 mpg in highway driving on the TL 2011. To improve operational efficiency, the standard Acura TL 3.5L V-6 engine gets a series of friction reduction technologies, while an air inlet system of journal offers more fresh air for both 3.5L and 3.7L.
For 2012, two distinct versions of luxury performance sedan Acura remain: a power of 280, front-wheel-drive TL with a powerful 305 hp Acura TL Acura paired with exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive ™ (SH-AWD ™ ). The performance model 6MT spirit will continue to be offered in the 2012 lineup Acura TL SH-AWD, helping to broaden the appeal of the Acura TL sedan among buyers of luxury performance.

 The BMW M3 is one of BMW’s factory output of cars that have been very famous for its reliability in the automotive world. The 2011 M3′s double-clutch transmission pulled away from stops and dealt with slow speeds better than the manual. I’m not a fan of BMW’s gear selectors for its . Slowing as you approach stoplights, there’s sometimes an odd lurching sensation when the transmission downshifts or chooses Neutral. It’s pretty subtle, but I did notice it; it’s the type of thing that would drive a manual-transmission-purist up the wall.
Ride & Handling
The steering is pinpoint accurate and gives you a great sense of confidence when approaching hairpin turns or broad sweepers. Our had optional 19-inch wheels, and, as you’d expect, they did affect the ride.
The car was fine in the Comfort setting — I felt bumps in the road and large potholes, but overall the ride was very good given the rough conditions of Chicago’s roads.
Exterior
BMW says the M3 shares only the doors and trunklid with the regular 3 Series. To me, it looks like BMW has taken a clean, conservative and added some clean, conservative styling effects. It’s not blown-out and garish-looking, as some can be, and the M3 is a better car for it.
My favorite bit is the unpainted carbon fiber roof, which is exclusive to the M3. The carbon fiber material lowers the center of gravity, but the genius bit is leaving it unpainted. It looks really cool, even in contrast with the deep blue of our .
Interior
If there’s one thing BMW doesn’t get enough praise for, it’s the fact that its cars provide comfortable, safe driving positions. Also, when driving some it’s either hard to see out the car or it’s hard to judge exactly where the front or sides are. You want that if you intend to drive fast.
If you’re the sort who likes to be isolated from a car, the M3 isn’t for you.
Technology
There’s M-Drive, Drivelogic, EDC and so on.
The basics are that you can customize the car for a firmer ride, a more aggressive transmission shift program, a less intrusive electronic stability system and many other settings. After you’ve done that, the settings are saved and any time you want, you can press the M-Drive button on the steering wheel and they’ll pop into place.
When it comes time to go home, you simply dial everything back down to the civilized settings at the push of a single button and putter home like a good little boy.
Safety, Reliability & Mileage
The 2011 M3 has not been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but the 2010 has been, and its results should carry over when 2011 ratings are released. with active head restraints also received a Good rating in the Institute’s rear crash protection and head-restraint tests.
